3-Part Lipid Series & Cheat Sheet

Key learnings from The Proof's Lipid Series with lipidologist Dr. Thomas Dayspring

In this episode, we examine how our body absorbs lipids and transports them throughout the body – and what happens when it goes wrong.

We cover:

  • What the lipid transport system is, the key parts of the system, and what happens when it goes wrong.
  • How our body absorbs lipids (fats and sterols) and transports them throughout the body
  • What cholesterol and triglycerides are and how they function in the body
  • The function of the major classes of lipoproteins (chylomicrons, VLDLs, IDLs, LDLs, and HDLs)
  • Risk factors for atherosclerosis
  • Common misconceptions

We talk about the individualised testing you can get to understand where your lipids are now. Discover the tests you need, the ones you don’t, and when to start testing to protect yourself against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

You’ll learn:

  • The tests you need and the ones you don’t
  • When to perform your first lipid test and how often you should retest
  • The one test everyone should do once in their lifetime
  • Why ApoB is a superior test to LDL-C
  • Whether HDL-C is an important test

We discuss in detail the interventions you can make to lower the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).

We walk through four main drug classes, discussing their mechanism of action, effectiveness, and safety profile.

We discuss:

  • The four main drug classes used to lower risk of ASCVD
  • Evidence we have to support a variety of different interventions
  • The development of ASCVD treatment
  • Current trials and possibilities for the future

Meet Simon

Host of The Proof podcast, nutritionist, sports physiotherapist, creator of theproof.com blog and author of The Proof is in the Plants. The Proof is in the Plants is my first book, and it walks through the science of eating for a healthier you and a healthier planet. It contains the agenda-free information that we all need to become more conscious of how our daily food choices affect our body and the world around us.

My philosophy is simple. We live in an environment that makes it incredibly hard to follow an evidence-based dietary pattern, an environment that in many ways sets us up for failure. Rather than waiting for this environment to change, or waiting to experience pain, I want to arm you with evidence-based solutions. This will help you better navigate the world in which we live and improve your chance of living a long, healthy life, allowing you to do more of whatever it is you love to do.
