Birth, Breastfeeding, and the Truth About Baby Food | Dr Federica Amati

This is part two of my conversation with head nutritionist at ZOE, researcher, and author, Dr Federica Amati. In part one we walked through the golden window of preconception, sperm and egg health, GLP-1 medications and fertility, and nutrition through pregnancy. Here we pick up where we left off and follow the first 1,000 days all the way to the end: the final weeks before birth, how a baby is delivered, breastfeeding and formula, weaning and first foods, and the environmental exposures that sit behind all of it.

Much of this territory has become a source of guilt rather than clarity, which is a shame, because the evidence is more reassuring than the headlines suggest. Federica’s framing is the one I keep coming back to: this window is critical, but it is not fragile. Our biology is remarkably good at adapting to an imperfect world. And most of what shapes these early years is structural, not the result of any one parent’s choices. As she puts it, if you want a public health intervention that improves the health of future generations, you support parents to spend time with their children.

What We Cover:

  • Why the first 1,000 days set what Federica calls the ramp of ageing, and why a critical window is not the same as a fragile one
  • Choline, iodine, and omega-3: how much you actually need, and why the advice to eat four eggs a day for choline does not hold up
  • The folic acid versus methylated folate debate, including the grain of truth behind the colorectal cancer concern
  • What the evidence really says about C-sections and a baby’s microbiome, and why those differences appear to converge by age two
  • Breast milk as a living system rather than simply food, and an honest comparison with formula, including where formula has the advantage
  • Why the UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, and why Federica directs her anger at the system rather than at parents
  • Weaning without the marketing: the smoosh test, why acceptance can take eight to 12 exposures, and what baby pouches are actually for
  • Microplastics and endocrine disruptors: which exposures are worth taking seriously, and the small number of swaps that do the most work

What I appreciate most about the way Federica talks about this period is that she hands agency back to parents without pretending the system is set up to help them. Her closing message is worth holding onto: human biology is resilient, none of this was ever about perfection, and if you are thinking carefully about any of it, you are almost certainly already doing a good job.
